Permutrix

the alternative to Sudoku

Play Permutrix and help solve a great mathematical problem!

$5000 prize for solving a 256-row Permutrix

Permutrix is the game based on the VMPC function discovered by Bartosz Zoltak. The function was published on an international scientific conference FSE. A publication, at Cambridge University shows that the function could solve a famous mathematical problem "P vs NP". Clay Mathematics Institute, USA, founded one million us dollars in prize for solving it.

The brainstorm - your observations on playing Permutrix can help solve this famous problem! Share your observations with us!

Permutrix 3.8.c  of 17.06.2010

A new current Permutrix is published once every few days.

The name Permutrix is derived from words Permutation (a set of shuffled numbers) and Matrix (a sort of table with numbers used in mathematics).

How to play Permutrix...

The purpose of the game is to fill the table with numbers. This is an example Permutrix:

And this is how it looks done:

- numbers in columns B and C are the same.
- numbers in columns D and E differ by 1.
- the pair of numbers repeats in all three blocks.

Permutrix rules:

Fill each column of the table with different numbers from 1 to 6 and this way form 6 pairs of numbers. A pair is two numbers lying side by side in one block. Put each pair in the table 3 times, each time in a different block. The order of numbers is important, e.g. and are different pairs. Additionally:

1. Numbers lying side by side in columns B and C are the same. E.g.

2. Numbers lying side by side in columns D and E differ by 1. E.g.
The number greater by 1 in column E. An exception in columns D and E:

Permutrix can contain more rows and more blocks.

Have fun!

Your first Permutrix :-)

Type a Permutrix.
The whole table can be filled using only the rules.

In case of doubts click on the picture below to see the solution:

block +0 block +1 block
A B      C D      E F

Here you can check the solution. If your table looks the same then congratulations! Your first Permutrix is correctly solved! :-)

Type c Permutrix.
To fill the table one number in any cell needs to be guessed.

In case of doubts click on the picture below to see the solution:

block +0 block +1 block
A B      C D      E F

Here you can check the solution. If your table looks the same then big congratulations! Your second Permutrix also solved! :-)

How to read Permutrix names:

An example Permutrix name is  3.6.a

The first number (3) is the number of blocks
The second number (6) is the number of rows
The third letter (a) is the Permutrix type:
  • a - the whole Permutrix can be solved without guessing
  • c - one number in any cell needs to be guessed

Good luck and have fun!
